Pakistan is one of the most undernourished nations in the world. According to an Oxfam survey, it is one of the 20 most food starved countries in the world along with some Sub-Saharan nations. Nearly two thirds of the population in Pakistan spends more than half of their monthly income on food. Even slight increases in food prices can plunge millions of households on the brink of starvation.
Aside from rising food prices, ineffective governance, floods in 2010 and market failure have worsened the problem of food insecurity. This is especially true in the rural areas. OSDI in its mission for poverty alleviation lays strong emphasis on proper nutrition. In this regard, food security projects are designed to provide adequate nutrition to vulnerable households who are experiencing food scarcity. Proper nutrition plays a significant role in ensuring that food deprived households are able to perform a productive role in their communities.
