The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) exists in order to respond to the current impacts of cotton production worldwide. BCI aims to promote measurable improvements in the key environmental and social impacts of cotton cultivation worldwide to make it more economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable. Since 2005, the BCI has been working with organisations from across the cotton supply chain and interested stakeholders to facilitate a solution for the mainstream cotton sector. The BCI's philosophy is to develop a market for a new mainstream commodity: ‘Better Cotton’ and thereby transform the cotton commodity to bring long-term benefits for the environment, farmers and other people dependent on cotton for their livelihood.

The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is a global multi-stakeholder partnership organization that is working towards improving the lives of poor people. WSSCC enhances collaboration amongst agencies and professionals working in with water supply and sanitation and contributes to the broader goals of poverty eradication, health and environmental improvement, gender equality and long-term social and economic development. The activities undertaken by WSSCC were recognized in the United Nations General Assembly resolution A/RES/45/181 of 21 December 1990. WSSCC's network of National WASH Coalitions and individual members gives it the legitimacy and flexibility to work effectively at community level. Through Networking & Knowledge Management, Advocacy & Communications and the Global Sanitation Fund, WSSCC is at the forefront of knowledge, debate and influence on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for all.
The Collaborative Council exists under a mandate from the United Nations. It is governed by a multi-stakeholder steering committee elected by the Collaborative Council's members, combining the authority of the UN with the flexibility of an NGO and the legitimacy of a membership organisation.
WSSCC works around the globe with underprivileged families who do not have access to clean water and sanitation, by aiming its policies and work to cater to their needs. The Collaborative Council has a special interest in sanitation and hygiene and emphasises the need to view water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) as an inseparable trinity for development.
